COFFEE TALK ON “CONNECTING DOTS AND BEYOND”

April 29, 2022
On 8 April 2022, 14:30 – 15:30 CEST, DEL4ALL conducted the last of the series of coffee talks with digital education experts from DEL4ALL community. The main theme of the last session was “Connecting dots and beyond“.

Roles of technological solutions in education sector among the issues with respect to the data collection and the choice of solutions that provide value to the teachers and learners has been discussed. Additionally the role that general digital competencies play in the 21st century has been pointed out as a major point that requires attention. This has a direct impact on the curricula for training teachers and educators, as they need to be enabled to teach these competencies and allow them to flourish in the teaching and learning settings, so this should be treated as a cross-cutting task in all areas of education. Policy alignment at the EU level is needed to accelerate the adoption of competency-based social and emotional learning programmes in member states’ schools and curricula. This requires programmes that assess the long-term impact of the digital transformation in education and the effectiveness of digital education policies.

A big thank you to all event attendees for the interesting discussion. In case you have missed the event, you can watch the recording here:

DIGITAL ENHANCED LEARNING – CONNECTING DOTS AND BEYOND : A GLIMPSE!

April 28, 2022
On 21st of April, DEL4ALL held its conclusive event “Digital Enhanced Learning – Connecting dots and beyond”. The remote event started off with a short introduction into the project and where we stand now, by the coordinator of the project, Dr. Giovanni Rimassa, CIO Martel Innovate.

Right after the opening, we had the honour of the keynote speech from Ms. Rehana Schwinninger-Ladak, Head of Unit Directorate General for Communication Networks, Content and Technology at European Commission. Her talk focussed on the Digital education action plan; insights on EC’s Policy direction and developments on the last policy document. Ms. Schwinninger-Ladak talked about the importance of digital transformation and the Twin Transitions. She emphasised on the EC Unit responsibilities which is to support the digital transformation of the education system. She mentioned how the pandemic shocked us all highlighting the weaknesses and therefore it also triggered responses to address those weaknesses. All stakeholders involved became aware of the digital divide and so digital skills became more important than ever.

Ms. Schwinninger-Ladak noted that Digital Education is a priority in many national plans, teacher training, as well the platforms (beyond skills and infrastructure) are prioritised in these plans. She added that tools and accessibility are key for inclusiveness.

She mentioned that sadly Europe is a late adopter of EdTech, and we can do more, EC is trebling investment, in pursuit of growth while honouring European values. There is a call to support collaboration between EdTech and other stakeholders, and develop a roadmap for the European EdTech Ecosystem.

Following the very informative keynote by Ms. Schwinninger-Ladak, we heard about identifying the dynamics in learning for the digital age: Digital skills development and digital learning for sustainable digital societies in Europe: Landscape, challenges, and opportunities through a panel discussion, moderated by Dr. Alex Grech, 3CL Foundation. The panellists involved were the Advisory Board members and Experts of the project DEL4ALL. There was an emphasis on the areas that needed priority in digital pedagogy. Concepts like back to lifelong learning, equity to address digital divide, understanding the dynamics of learning in the digital age, understanding the target group and then tailor the learning technology accordingly were paramount to have a successful digital transition. According to the discussion some keywords frequently came forward in context to digital technologies, adoption, speed, adjustment and culture! The panellists reiterated that one technology doesn’t fit all, there needs to be a good understanding of the target group. In order to understand the dynamics of learning in the digital age, one must understand digital transformation, can 1 technology be so inclusive as to help digitalise and educate all persons involved. Some also noted that the problem isn’t technology, which will scale and adapt, the investment needs to be in people to train them in order to use the technology and further its adoption in the education sector.

The second half of the event focussed on the findings of the project and presentations were made to showcase the DEL4ALL project’s research agenda, technology vs education matrix, the best practices in the post pandemic education world and finally the policy recommendations. Please stay tuned to get the final versions of these documents in the coming weeks when they will be published on the DEL4ALL website and via the social media channels.

We will keep working on the project’s objectives and further the vision and mission of DEL4ALL, for a resilient and inclusive learning community.

COFFEE TALK ON “DEVELOPING A HIGH-QUALITY DIGITAL ECOSYSTEM FOR DIGITAL EDUCATION IN EUROPE”

April 12, 2022
On 1 April 2022, 14:30 – 15:30 CEST, DEL4ALL continued with the series of coffee talks with digital education experts from DEL4ALL community. The main theme of the third session was “Developing a high-quality digital ecosystem for digital education in Europe“. Obstacles experienced in the last two years with the pandemic aimed to primarily bring learning platforms and content to function – identifying “simplicity of use” to be the driving success factor in implementing solutions. The participants reiterated the need to properly define the “use perspectives” in order to determine quality indicators for learning designs – as the range of learning applications is spanning such a broad variety.

In addition, the basic technical and administrative conditions for installing and maintaining hard- and software are far from being convincingly solved, especially in the primary and to a certain degree also in the secondary school sector.

The coffee talk was led by our project partners Prof. Georgios Toubekis and Selin Sezer, from Fraunhofer, and Klaudia Farkas, from 3CL, with the participation of DEL4ALL experts: Dorothea Kugelmeier, Prof. Melanie Platz, Dr. Claudia Harms-Schmid, Dr. Sharina Yunus, Viera Bordoy, and Prof. Carsten Fussan.

A big thank you to all event attendees for the interesting discussion. In case you have missed the event, you can watch the recording here:

COFFEE TALK ON “IMPROVING DIGITAL COMPETENCIES”

March 15, 2022
On 11 March 2022, 14:30 – 15:30 CEST, the DEL4ALL project continued with its series of community “get-together” talks with its digital education experts. The central theme of the second session was “Improving digital competencies”. The obstacles experienced, the measures taken to overcome them, and useful support in the last years were discussed. As a general theme, the role of leadership mindset (institutional and scientific) was emphasized to guide digitalization efforts in education.

The experts stressed that addressing real needs is the driver for successful digital transformation efforts. These needs have to be identified and to advocate for change – to the extent if changing mindsets or “culture” in a top-down approach is a key factor, or if changing actions and reinforcing such efforts to better reach towards new opportunities is the best way to lead to a changed mindset. The experts agreed that the education sector could learn a lot from other domains undergoing digital transformation changes – and take advantage of the methods and strategies developed there (e.g., “design thinking”), especially since changes happen only in stages. Whatever approach is followed – central appears to address the “why change” question thoroughly and find the answers that fit the local context in a meaningful way.

The coffee talk was led by our project partners Prof. Georgios Toubekis, from Fraunhofer, Aisling Third, from Open University, and Klaudia Farkas, from 3CL, with the participation of DEL4ALL experts: Dorothea Kugelmeier, Nikolaus Conrad, and Prof Sivaswamy Ramachandran.

A big thank you to all event attendees for the interesting discussion. In case you have missed the event, you can watch the recording here:

FIRST COFFEE TALK ON “RE-CONSTRUCTING STUDENT EXPERIENCE”

March 10, 2022
On 4 March 2022, 14:30 – 15:30 CEST, DEL4ALL kicked-off a series of coffee talks with digital education experts from DEL4ALL community. The main theme of the first session was “Re-constructing student experience”. The criteria used to determine best practices, identification of use cases that meet these desired criteria, and the obstacles and barriers encountered in adaptation were discussed in this context.

The coffee talk was led by our project partners Prof. Georgios Toubekis, from Fraunhofer, and Klaudia Farkas, from 3CL, with the participation of DEL4ALL experts: Dr. Maarten van der Kamp, Dorothea Kugelmeier, Viera Bordoy, Prof. Athina Karatzogianni, and Prof Sivaswamy Ramachandran.

From the many experiences shared during the talk, it became clear how necessary it is for educators to collectively rethink the paradigm of face-to-face learning and place more emphasis on the processes of learning design and tacit knowledge sharing, especially when adapting digital methods and technologies to their own context.

A big thank you to all event attendees for the interesting discussion. In case you have missed the event, you can watch the recording here:
