From 24 – 26 April 2020, the European Commission, led by the European Innovation Council and in close collaboration with the EU member states, hosted a pan-European hackathon, which brought together more than 21,000 participants in 3,500 teams to address several challenges related to the COVID-19 pandemic.

DEL4ALL member and digital education expert Dr Alex Grech from the Commonwealth Centre for Connected Learning (3CL) served as mentor during the hackathon and helped teams with challenges related to blockchain, education, advocacy and remote working within the context of social and political cohesion.

Next to several other teams, Dr Alex Grech also mentored one of the hackathon finalists: SkillLab, a Dutch start-up offering an AI-driven solution that offers skill-based career orientation and enables employment services to provide personal career orientation at scale. SkillLab’s value proposition is indicative of emerging business offerings in the EdTech and TVET sector, which are likely to become mainstream as the global education and employment sectors readjust to the post-COVID-19 worlds.

To follow-up on the hackathon, our DEL4ALL partners at 3CL conducted an interview with Christoph Bretgeld, Co-Founder & Director of Strategy at SkillLab, to see how the feedback received from experts during the hackathon can be incorporated in their business solution.
