Dr Ian Gauci is the Managing Partner at GTG Advocates, Afilexion Alliance and Caledo Group. He is engaged primarily in technology law, fintech, regtech, electronic communications, fintech, information society, data protection and gaming/gambling, while also focusing on consumer law, competition law, broadcasting law, cyber law, e-commerce, m-commerce, e-health, e-payment, information technology, unfair commercial practices and misleading advertising. He provides legal, regulatory and strategic advice to entrants in the gaming industry, content providers, electronic communications providers, data centres, e-commerce providers, payment institutions and software providers. Dr Gauci assists undertakings in wholesale access, roaming, interconnection, software and hardware agreements and has assisted clients in licensing requirements, auctions and negotiations in the electronic communications and gaming industry in Malta and abroad. He also advised and has assisted in mergers and acquisitions and represented clients in local and cross border negotiations, mediation and arbitration.
Dr Gauci also provides consultancy on legal matters related to blockchain technology, smart contracts, crypto-currencies and ICO/ITO. He has assisted the Maltese Government amongst others on issues dealing with E-Trust certification, the Notarial council in Malta on their Digital Strategy, the Malta Business Registry on E signatures, the Malta Communications Authority (MCA) on its E-commerce strategy as well as the Malta Gaming Authority (MGA). He was one of the strategic advisors appointed by Government on the National Blockchain Strategy Taskforce. Interested in all things tech, Dr Gauci is deemed to be one of Malta’s top fintech and blockchain experts. Dr Gauci is ranked by Chambers and Partners as well as by Legal 500 as a Band 1 Fintech Law Expert.
Dr Gauci is an advisor to the Malta Digital Innovation Authority (MDIA) as well as the Malta Financial Services Authority (MFSA). He has co-authored the Maltese Electronic Communications Framework, the Maltese VFA Legislation and the DLT Framework. He lectures Legal Futures and Technology at the University of Malta. Dr Gauci is an international speaker and author and is also a co-founder and Secretary of the Malta Blockchain Association and one of the founders of the Maltese IT Lawyers Association.
